Why bother to do tai chi?
There are many reasons to do Tai Chi and I feel that they can all be said with one word overall and that is health. Health of the mind, body, spirit or heart. But underneath that umbrella Tai Chi offers a foundation to understanding yourself, to simply acknowledge yourself for who you are. The things you have tried and may have not been so great at and then the things you have tried and have been wonderfully surprised at performing them. What do these acts or efforts tell you about yourself? Maybe take more time to relax or exercise. To be more tolerant of others or perform a selfless act. Tai Chi, like I said is many things but most importantly it is being aware or in the moment of what is happening around you or too you at that time. It could be taking in the fresh air of a scenic view as the breeze hits your face quickly washing over you, is it kids playing in a park, or the white clouds moving through the sky that you wish you could just fall or fly through. The simple things are the most complex because we take them for granted. Now I know I have reiterated some well known cliché but why not? The simple is the most complex because there are times when we know better and yet more often then we would like, we choose act on something that does not benefit us in the long run. An instructor I knew lived by this motto (the greatest cause of failure in life... is giving up something we want, for something we want in the moment.) Tai Chi is about practicing being in the moment we want... resisting the distractions both good and bad in our life. The health in Tai Chi for the: Mind-learning to properly let go of stress will reduce tension in the body Body-keeps you young and limber Spirit or heart- learning of the power and potential inside of you I hope this was helpful in understanding why somebody might want to try Tai Chi. However, this is just the basics and for some that is all they want or need but there is also another side to Tai Chi, a martial arts side. Please if you have any questions or would like to respond with critizism of any kind it is both welcome and appreciated:) Until next time... take care- Scott R.
